The touchscreen and App connection make it!

When I bought my condo this past August it came with a high end (Architecture Series) KitchenAid microwave with touch screen. I fell in love with that because of its convenience and quality operation. Alas..... over the past month it died (circuit boards inside went bad and no more replacements). So I was forced to look for a replacement. I looked for days, until I remembered that Whirlpool bought out the old KitchenAid line and perhaps Whirlpool had one similar.
YES.. they certainly did!!! This model that I'm reviewing is almost exactly like the previous, but BETTER!!! Not only is the touchscreen in color (as compared to the monochrome of the old one), but you can scroll on it, as one would do with an iPhone or such. AND... it connects to WiFi for updates. Updates not only to the software that runs in it, but also to the menu it has inside.
EVEN BETTER was the "Scan-to-Cook" feature that I thought I'd never use... until I tried it. I had friends over and took out a frozen TGIFriday's Spinach Artichoke Dip. I used the Whirlpool app on my iPhone that is connected to the microwave and scanned the UPC barcode on the box. Lo and behold.... on the touchscreen of the microwave appeared DETAILED directions on how to cook the item!! No more squinting at the package. Definitely impressed!
Equally impressive is that when you are cooking something for a long time and are in another room, when this Whirlpool microwave is finished, it will send notification to the iPhone AND to the Apple Watch!! No more cold food because one forgot it was in the microwave!
The unit also has a VARIABLE magnetron (the device inside that generates microwaves to cook the food). This means that when you want to cook something at 50% power, this Whirlpool will "dial down" the power output of the magnetron and continuously send out microwaves (at 50% power) to cook. Other (cheaper) units will turn on and off and on and off and on (you get the idea) the magnetron to approximate 50% power. So other (cheaper)ones will run at 100%, then turn off the magetron for a few seconds and then rev up at 100% again, over and over. Not an efficient way to cook at all. This Whirlpool's variable unit is the best thing.
Well... maybe let's add the fact that there's also a convection unit inside the microwave.... NOW it's the Best thing!
Sure this unit is expensive (mine cost $829), but you get what you pay for and in this instance a QUALITY, high functioning, microwave.
If all you are looking to do is pop popcorn, then go down to your local CVS and pick up a $69 microwave.
But.. if you are looking to truly COOK a meal properly... then this unit is it!
